Towns of Conception Bay South and Paradise Come Together to Provide Turkeys to their Local Food Bank

December 16, 2019 - Conception Bay South and Paradise, NL – The Towns of Conception Bay South and Paradise were quick to respond to a call for help, when it heard that the CBS / Paradise Food Bank needed more food to get them through the holiday season. By the next day, the Towns had purchased $5,000 worth of turkeys to ensure that no resident was without one this Christmas.

“This is not a time of year that families need to be worried about putting food on the table for their loved ones. This is a time that should be about happiness, and we want to make sure that this is the case for our residents,” said Conception Bay South Mayor Terry French.

“We never want to see anyone in our communities be without food, and that is especially true during the holiday season. We are proud to partner with our neighbours in Conception Bay South to help the CBS / Paradise Food Bank provide for those who are in need and help all residents to be able to enjoy a Christmas dinner,” said Paradise Mayor Dan Bobbett.

The turkeys were purchased through a $1,000 contribution from the Town of Conception Bay South, a $2,000 contribution from the Town of Paradise and from $2,000 worth of 50-50 ticket proceeds, being sold this week at the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling, Boost National, at the Conception Bay South Arena.

“So many people have been at the CBS Arena this week cheering on their home town favourite, Team Gushue. It demonstrates something we all know – how much Newfoundlanders and Labradorians come together to support their own. And now, our donation to the food bank is doing the same. We know that everyone watching these games and purchasing 50-50 tickets would feel proud with our decision to do so. We are so much more than curling – we are a community that comes together to support our own,” said Dr. Adrian Power, chair, Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling, Boost National.

The Towns are both very involved in supporting the CBS / Paradise Food Bank and recognize the crucial service it provides for community members. The municipalities make regular annual donations plus in-kind contributions. They also collect food donations throughout the year at many events, such as: internal food drives, Fire Prevention Week, Halloween skates, winter and summer festivals, tree lighting ceremonies, community bingos, Santa Claus parades, and much more.
