To mark the 50th anniversary of incorporation as a municipality, the Town of Paradise today unveiled plans to commemorate the occasion. Over the coming months, the Town will host a variety of events, programs, and initiatives to celebrate this milestone, with all activities guided by public health requirements.
“On July 13, 1971, the Town of Paradise was officially incorporated and over the past five decades we have grown from a small town to one of the largest municipalities in the province,” said Mayor Dan Bobbett. “We want everyone – our youngest residents to those young at heart, our wonderful community groups, and our thriving business sector – to join together and celebrate all that Paradise has achieved and become over the past 50 years.”
The Town is preparing a variety of virtual, small group, and in-person events, and plans are being finalized in accordance with provincial public health guidelines. Full details on each event will be announced separately, closer to the date, to ensure all current requirements are followed.
Highlights of the celebrations include:
- 50th Anniversary Main Event (Saturday, July 17, 2021) – an all-ages, family fun day in Paradise Park
- Time Capsule – the Town will fill it with a variety of items to highlight life in Paradise in 2021 and will be sealed for 25 years
- Shop Local BINGO – residents can play along for prizes while at the same time supporting the business sector
- Senior Story Telling Collection – an initiative to gather and record stories on the history of Paradise from those who have lived in the Town for the past 50 years (and longer!)
- Trail-A-Thon – a virtual event to encourage residents to use all the trails in the Town
- Sport and Recreation Expo – a showcase of programs, facilities, and local athletes
- 50 Plus Celebration – an event dedicated to residents 50 plus and older
- Paradise 50 Puppy Parade – a pet expo for the furry residents and their owners
- Bubble BBQ – neighbourhood celebrations within household “bubbles”
“This past year has been difficult for everyone as we navigate living through a global pandemic and I think we are all looking forward to being able to celebrate as a community. The 50th Anniversary Celebrations are a great opportunity to gather together and all of us on Council look forward to seeing everyone at all the events, both virtually and in-person,” said Mayor Bobbett.
To support the organization of the Anniversary Celebrations, the Town created a 50th Anniversary Advisory Committee. It is comprised of energetic, motivated, and civic-minded residents who are providing input on the celebrations and serving as ambassadors to help foster community spirit and pride at the programs, events, and initiatives.
The members of the Anniversary Advisory Committee are Serena Barefoot, Patricia Burton, Glenn Carew, Keith Glynn, Lloyd Hussey, Lisa Hynes, Curtis Knee, Judy Sparkes, and Derrick Turner.
“The 50th Anniversary Advisory Committee has been instrumental in planning all our events, programs and initiatives. I extend sincere thanks to these individuals for volunteering to support our anniversary celebrations,” added Mayor Bobbett.
