With students and teachers returning to schools this week, the Town of Paradise has implemented a number of measures to enhance safety in school zones. Starting this school year, crossing guards will be in place at each of the four elementary schools: Elizabeth Park, Holy Family, Octagon Pond and Paradise Elementary.
“We understand safety in school zones is a top concern for our residents and it is a top concern for Council as well and that is why we made an investment in Budget 2020 to have crossing guards at our elementary schools,” said Mayor Dan Bobbett. “We are pleased to have the crossing guards in place as a new school year starts and we remind all residents to follow their instructions and guidance.”
The Town regularly maintains traffic calming measures in key areas around schools and these are in place and ready for the start of school. This includes two permanent speed display radar signs in each of the four school areas. In addition, staff have visited all school areas to ensure that crosswalks and required line painting is completed.
For the back to school period, the Town’s Municipal Enforcement Officers will actively monitor the school areas in the morning and afternoons during the opening and dismissal times. They will focus on ensuring everyone is adapting to the new crossing guard system and monitoring and ticketing for any parking infractions. The Officers will also be observing for speeding and dangerous driving in these areas and reporting any such incidents to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary for ticketing and follow-up. During this time, Town crews will also assist with morning traffic control at strategic locations at each elementary school.
“We wish all our students, teachers and administrators, an enjoyable and productive school year,” said Mayor Bobbett. “We know this school year will be a different one for everyone, but it must still be a safe one. The Town has implemented a number of measures to help with school zone safety, but all residents have a role to play by reducing speeds and using caution in and around our schools. Working together makes our Town safer for everyone.”
