Originally from Parker's Cove on the Burin Peninsula, Larry Vaters has lived in the Town of Paradise since 2001 where he and his wife have raised both of their kids.
Larry graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Commerce (co-op) and a Bachelor of Arts (French major). He has also completed certificate programs in human resource management, public sector leadership and management development and social media and e-marketing.
Since 2006, Larry has worked as a communications professional in the federal public service in internal and corporate communications, media relations and web management. Prior to joining the federal public service, he was the first provincial executive director of Canadian Parents for French (CPF), a role he held for seven years.
Larry believes volunteerism is an integral component to community development and engagement. He actively volunteered with the Paradise Soccer Club (PSC) and served in many roles, including coach, vice-president, director of administration and senior player/teams director and director of community relations over a period of 13 years. He was also a member of the PSC Community Relations and Infrastructure Committee and served as chair of the SunSplash Youth Soccer Tournament - one of the largest youth soccer tournaments in Atlantic Canada - for five years. In 2019, he was proud to be nominated as the Town of Paradise Volunteer of the Year for his volunteer work with PSC.
Larry also has a thorough knowledge of the education system through his many lead roles in education advocacy and volunteerism. He completed two terms as the CPF-Newfoundland and Labrador provincial president and also served as chair of the CPF Council of Presidents as well as on many other CPF committees and working groups in the areas of governance, nominations and finance. He was the director of finance on the Canadian Parents for French (CPF) National Board from 2021-2023 and a board member with the Shallaway Youth Choir from 2020-2023. Larry also served as the chair of the Mount Pearl Senior High School Council for four years as well as a parent representative on the Mount Pearl Intermediate and Hazelwood Elementary School Councils.
In 2021, Larry was elected to the Town of Paradise Council. Larry was appointed as the Chair of the Recreation and Community Services Committee, and a member of the Administration and Corporate Services Committee and the Infrastructure and Engineering Committee. He is also the Town of Paradise representative on the Eastern Regional Service Board and is currently a member of the Finance committee. He also served as a town representative on the Northeast Avalon Joint Council from 2021-2023.
In May 2023, Larry was elected to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Board of Directors. In addition to his role as the Newfoundland and Labrador representative, he is also a member of the FCM Atlantic Regional Caucus, member of the Standing Committee on Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development and member of the Standing Committee on Municipal Finance, Infrastructure and Transportation.
